John 19:28-30 Common English Bible (CEB)
28 After this, knowing that everything was already completed, in order to fulfill the scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was nearby, so the soldiers soaked a sponge in it, placed it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.
Join Pastor Brett as we continue our Lent series, Famous Last Words. During this series, we are discussing the final words of Jesus as recorded in the four Gospels as he died on the cross. These words are important and invite us into the mind and heart of Jesus as He sacrificed Himself for us.
This week we hear three simple words, “I Am Thirsty.” From the surface, the words seem to reveal Jesus’s physical dehydration and need for water, but these words reveal the deeper meaning of Jesus thirsting and longing for communion with God after being separated from Him for nearly three hours. Like Jesus, we are created with a spiritual thirst which can only be satisfied when we orient and devote our lives to Jesus. This week we are encouraged to quench our spiritual thirst by engaging with the Holy Scriptures.
